Vance's Story
by Vance Smith
My name is Vance Smith. I am 42 years old. I was involved in a motorcycle accident in 1981, five days after my 17th birthday. Not much of a present for a healthy young man. As a result of the accident a C 5, 6 and 7 fracture of the spinal cord and multiple broken bones has had me wheelchair bound for the rest of my life.

Even though helmet laws were not in effect yet on that hot July day that helmet saved my life and could save many more deaths or injuries. The last week in April 2007 in Amador County saw 3 motorcycle wrecks on one Sunday, all medi-flighted out with major injuries.

Safety is a factor, always precautions can be taken. As we know we can be safe and stay within the speed limits and laws. Animals are a minor problem within the foothills. Always be aware of coming traffic to see if the drivers are paying attention to what they are doing, not crossing the line. EYES on the road! “Drive Defensively”. There are a lot more vehicles on these old country roads than before. All we can do is be careful and teach our future drivers to be safe. It might be someone you care about or love who might be writing this next letter.
